Tips, Tricks & Shortcuts (IBPS Focused)
1. Don’t Learn Words — Learn “Word Behaviour”
Stop memorizing dictionary meanings. Instead, observe how the word behaves in the sentence.
Example: "Critical"
• Critical issue → Serious
• Critical analysis → Analytical
• Critical tone → Disapproving
🔑 Shortcut: One word = multiple tones
2. Synonym Elimination
If the word feels negative, eliminate all positive options immediately. Directional logic beats dictionary knowledge.
3. Antonym Direction
Antonyms are about Direction. If the target word means "less", the answer must move toward "more".
| Tone Bucket | Keywords |
|---|---|
| Positive | Optimistic, supportive, encouraging |
| Negative | Critical, skeptical, hostile |
| Neutral | Balanced, measured, objective |
5. Context Clue Formula
Watch for "U-Turn" connectors: But, However, Although. They signal an immediate shift in word tone.
6. Policy Language (Mains)
🏆 Exam Hall Golden Rules
-
The Calm Factor: If stuck between two, pick the word that sounds most formal and neutral.
-
Quality > Quantity: 15 words learned via "usage" are better than 50 dictionary meanings.
